October 26, 2016:Buncombe County Chairman Candidates

Republican Chuck Archerd and Democrat Brownie Newman, the two rival candidates for chair of the Buncombe County Commission, will take part in a lunchtime forum at Leadership Asheville Forum’s October 26th Critical Issues event.

Accountant and investor Chuck Archerd was chosen by the Buncombe County Republican party to run for chairman of the county commission after former commissioner Miranda DeBruhl dropped out of the race.  Archerd is a partner in Archerd-Bell Investment Group, which owns property in Asheville, Raleigh and other cities throughout the Southeast. He also developed the regional medical park located at I-40 and Sweeten Creek Rd.  Archerd ran in the Republican primary for District 3 commissioner four years ago but has never held public office.  He says he and his opponent have many differences, which he looks forward to exploring with the voters. Chuck Archerd and his wife, Anne, live in Biltmore Park.

Democrat Brownie Newman has been a member of the Buncombe County Commission from District 1 since 2012.  He had previously been a member of the Asheville City Council, where he served from 2003-2011.  He also has been on the boards of the Metropolitan Sewerage District and the Asheville Regional Airport .  Newman holds a BA in history and political science from Warren Wilson College and is a fellow of the North Carolina Institute of Political Leadership.  He is a founder and partner in a solar energy firm called Headwaters Solar.  Brownie Newman lives with his wife and two daughters in the Montford neighborhood.

The forum will be moderated by Prof. Chris Cooper, head of the political science department at Western Carolina University.  This could be your last opportunity to hear from the two men who are asking for your vote on November 8th.    We hope you can join us.
